Once aptly described as "Fairport Convention meets Cream", Tabernacle is the loud and heavy brainchild of San Francisco folkies Walker Phillips and Caira Paravel, who each released well-received solo albums in 2019. Although they’ve swapped their acoustic guitars for Les Pauls and tube amplifiers, they've not strayed from their folk roots - Tabernacle's repertoire consists exclusively of traditional folk ballads, many of which are hundreds of years old. The melodies and lyrics of these medieval ballads are retained, but the arrangements are re-imagined as futuristic proto-metal space journeys.
Phillips on guitar/vocals and Paravel on lead vocals/synthesizers, are joined by Camilla Saufley (Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, Golden Void) on bass and Adam Weaver (The Asteroid No. 4, Damma Damma) on drums. Tabernacle’s live performances are a theatrical and improvisational mix of storytelling, wailing guitars, pummeling rhythms and traditional singing.
